What has happened to Adverbs ?
This is the latest of my grumbles about the awful grammar which is prevalent today. The adverb seems to have disappeared ! An example:- "He did real good !" This phrase is commonly heard and in most cases the speaker or writer intends to convey the message that the person about whom they are talking or writing had a successful time. My response when hearing that phrase is "Really ? To whom ?" What they should say of course is "He did really well", but I'm sure I need hardly point that out if you are taking time to read this ! I'll have more to write about this later as my breakfast (cheese on toast of course) is ready.

How is it possible to eat healthy? If I hear one more person say that I may scream. I heard a substitute teacher say, "You guys walked down the hall so quiet. Good job!" Ugh!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhy when I drive by a school does the sign say, Drive slow.?
Are people serious? Why put incorrect grammar on any sign anywhere? especially in front of a school!!!!!
Nice to know I'm not alone ! Why not complain to the local authority or whoever (or should it be "whomever" ?)is responsible for the "Drive Slow" sign - I bet they don't even know it is incorrect !
ReplyDeleteDid you read my "lay" and "lie" blog ? This one really drives me mad at present ! And as for the misuse of the apostrophe........
It has gotten worse. It's so bad, that I find myself confused and questioning everything I say. We hear them used incorrectly so often that everyone accepts it as correct and then uses them incorrect(ly) haha! Killing me the most is the current Outback Steakhouse campaign who's tagline is "Live Adventurous." OMG, it drives me bananas! More recently I have noticed my friends saying, "don't take it so personal..." Adverbs are officially gone.
ReplyDeleteKeep fighting - complain to the companies which use incorrect grammar. Post blogs! Keep the pressure on !
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to hear that it's not just me. I was wondering if I am being petty, but I was just wondering what the state of the English language will be in 10 years. I fear that everyone will be writing as they do when they text!! U no?? No wonder the testing of America's children is showing such poor results. We're in trouble folks...not only in English, but also in math and science. Too many of our teachers don't seem to recognize the problems or just don't care enough!
ReplyDeleteSadly not mistaken
You are not alone ! One of my concerns is that more and more misunderstandings will occur as grammar and punctuation go out of the window. So far we can thank book publishers and to a lesser extent newspaper editors for maintaining standards, but how long will this last ? The whole point of correct English - or any other language - is to clarify what is being written, to make it unambiguous. The old example of "the boy's pens" or "the boys' pens" always comes to mind. A few years ago my wife had to take a "business English" course organised by her employer and was told not to bother about punctuation, so she raised this example and of course the instructor couldn't answer it. She walked out of the course, and others followed. So all is not lost !
ReplyDelete"She took it serious." GAH!!!!
ReplyDeleteI have been watching Channel 3 tonight and I just heard a news reporter state:
ReplyDelete..."So, take these warnings serious!". This is a major channel, is it not? Who wrote this script? Isn't being literate a requisite to getting a job as a scriptwriter for TV?
