I've probably had a moan about this somewhere in my past blogs, but it's really getting on my nerves - even a BBC reporter got it wrong recently ! It's really quite simple - fewer in number, less in quantity. So for example, less sugar but fewer lumps of sugar. You can't say "less people did this" - well you can but it's grammatically incorrect. And if by chance you hear "lesser people", this implies that they somehow lack something, they are not as good as they might be. It is fewer people ! I could go on, but I'm sure you get the picture, and anyway if you are reading this you probably feel the same as I do !
The popular press could help here. The "heavies" such as the Guardian, Independent, Times, Telegraph, all set a good example with their written English, but the tabloids sometimes leave a lot to be desired. And as they are read by far more people (or perhaps fewer haha), then correct grammar might just become the norm and we would all understand each other more easily ! In your dreams, as they say !
