I live in a small town in the centre of England. Over the past few months, several 500 ft high windmills have been erected about half a mile outside the town. These will soon be generating electricity which will be fed into the national grid. The opposition to these windmills was extraordinary. A group of local - and not so local - individuals decided that they didn't want them there and went to great lengths to stop them being built. Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and personally I love them. It gives me great comfort to look out of my bedroom window and see them turning - every revolution they make saves a few drops of oil or lumps of coal from being burned. Far from spoiling the landscape, I think they enhance it. So why are there not more of them round the country ? Go to southern Spain and see the arrays there ! Together with solar panels we have two marvellous ways of getting what is in effect free energy, and yet governments don't seem to be encouraging this advance enough.
We could, for example, do the following (for all I know it already is being done !) :-
(1) All new industrial and retail developments should be required to generate their own power, either from windmills or from solar panels. It would be so simple to include a couple of these windmills in or near any out of town shopping centre. Existing retail and industrial estates would be required to catch up within a defined period.
(2) All new housing developments would also be required to do the same.
(3) Government should give small communities, with a population up to a certain number, encouragement and grants to build their own, local wind-farms. The community would own the windmills and power generated sold to the national grid. The money made from this sale could go either to individual families or to the local council - either way, bills would be reduced. I am aware that this is not a new idea and at least one village in the UK is already doing this.
(4) For exisiting houses, the problem is expense. Solar panels, although paying for themselves over a few years, aren't cheap and it is difficult for the average householder to afford them. So, either grants or interest free loans would be required. I understand that there are also mini-windmills available which can be attached to your roof, and the same would apply.
This all seems to me to be so easy, but I'm sure there are a few difficulties to be overcome. But we have the ability and the technology to do all this, so let's get on with it !

I'm with you all the way, I see windmills as hopeful rather than an eyesore. Certainly better than a big nuclear power plant outside your door.
ReplyDeleteGrowing extra limbs and growing in the dark could be fun, though.
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't mind, Dave, but I wrote a post about your site on my site. It is called I Like Cheese. Go figure.
I don't mind in the least Doug - I shall respond in due course !
